Wendy Cartmell, local author

Local Author, Wendy Cartmell, has had her crime thriller Steps to Heaven made e-thriller of the month, alongside Stuart McBride and Costa nominated author Benjam Wood.

The review, by R R Gordon concludes that Steps to Heaven is:

"an absorbing story, with a well-constructed plot assembled on the foundations of a strong basic theme. The characters are believable and likeable and the backdrop to the story – the army garrison – provides an interesting glimpse of life in the forces. Producers of television shows are always looking for new detective characters and I imagine that the army investigator, Sgt Major Crane, would be right up their street. I heartily recommend Steps To Heaven to fans of crime thrillers, police procedurals and whodunnits."

The Capistrano Film Forum is open to all. All films are shown in their original languages and are shown on a large screen in the Capistrano Social Salon in El Capistrano Village, starting promptly at 6 PM. Wine (or alternate beverages on request) and "nibbles" are served.

The next film is:

Friday Jan. 4th ORLANDO (1992) Historical fiction (UK – 94 min.)

Novel by Virginia Woolf. Screenplay and directed by Sally Potter.

Orlando (Tilda Swinton), a man of ideal nobility starts his search for love, poetry, a place in society and a meaning in life, in and around the court of historical England in the late 16th century. The blessing of eternal life from Queen Elizabeth I (Quentin Crisp) enables him a long and deep philosophical quest, accompanied by the features of "noble" English life with a good taste for irony. Both are shown when Orlando, partly fed up and disgusted with how men think and act, returns from his ambassadorship in the Far East as a woman of ideal nobility and continues her journey to realize the truth about life, love, and approaching one's own sex in the late 18th century England. For Orlando, someone who has lived four hundred years and has not aged a day, finding humanity's forgotten need for androgyny is the key to her own happiness as well as her daughter's. Sally Potter's adaptation not only tells the story on film with brilliant visual design, but also tries to extend the plot as Woolf would have, had she lived to the end of the twentieth century. With: Billy Zane, Lothaire Bluteau, John Wood. In English.

Property Sales rise in Málaga

PROPERTY sales in Malaga have shown the first sign of improvement in four years. Sales have increased by 3.5% in the nine months to September compared to the same time last year.
Foreign buyers were responsible for nearly a quarter of the properties purchased, snapping up 3,099 of the 12,692 houses sold in that period, according to the Ministry of Public Works.
Of those homes, 30% were bought by Britons, placing them at the top of the list of foreign investors in Spain’s property market.

Dyson Repairs

Hi Ed, Re Dyson repairs.

Ring 902 305 530 which is Dyson Espana based in Madrid, from where I have purchased spares and other Dyson products. They will tell you where the nearest Dyson repairer/agent is. Ask for Allana (Girls Name) or Department Inglis and are very helpful, but beware - if the machine was bought in the UK and any modifications have been made like (change of plug) etc. it invalidates the Guarantee even thought it may have been a 5 year guarantee.

Torremolinos Ayuntamiento & the Boss of Animal Sanctuary….

TORREMOLINOS town hall may have ‘colluded’ with a beleaguered animal sanctuary in order to siphon off public money.

The Olive Press can reveal that the close relationship between Torremolinos Animal Parque boss Carmen Marin and the town hall may have tacitly allowed the extermination of over 2,800 pets without sufficient anaesthetic.

According to court documents seen by the paper, Marin made a number of, as yet unexplained, payments totalling over €50,000 to Mayor Pedro Fernandez Montes’s brother Jose Fernandez.

They were made in a series of six ‘to the bearer’ cheque transactions between December 2005 and March 2006. All of them were cashed by the brother. So far, despite questioning from the Guardia Civil, neither the brother or the town hall have explained what they were for.

Malaga to Nerja Motorway–Radar

I have just returned this morning from the airport and noted on the way home that there are more traffic cameras to watch out for:- there is a section of downhill road where there is an overhead gantry with an 80kph sign and Velocidad Controlada Por Radar (about a kilometre before the one that we all know) and usually everybody drives through the area at a high rate of knots. Well now there ARE cameras up there!! So, watch your speed! Nigel.

Transfering a Motorbike to Spanish plates

Hi Gerry,
It's very easy if you use a Gestoria, it can take some time and cost quite a few euros however it really is dependant on a few things.
How old is the vehicle?
Has it been modified in any way?

It has to be in the condition that it says on your V5, by that I mean the mods that a lot of bikers including yours truly do to their bikes in the UK,
Certainly when it goes for it's ITV ( MOT ) it will need to be in original condition.
I handed over my V5 to the Gestoria and it was all done for me, and of course the bike then goes onto Spanish plates.
Contrary to popular belief, you do pay a tax on the motorcycle and it has to be registered with whatever Ayuntamiento you use.

However it's nowhere near as much as the UK currently is
I have a very special Honda which hadn't been seen in Spain before, so I had to get written certification from Honda that they did indeed make the bike, the whole process from start to finish cost around 1000 euros, that's import tax, Gestoria's fee, ITV, etc
Personally I would use a Gestoria and let them sort it out.

If you are in or near Nerja speak with Jorge at CERETO's next to Mercadona .
Hope this helps, and as far as I'm aware is correct, having said that I've been in Spain quite awhile now, so some things may have changed, but we are in Spain so maybe not :)
all the best,
btw, what bike do you have ?

(And now we'd all like to know which bike you have! digametorrox @  Just Jane)

Algorobo Lidl

What can I say?

Well first, don't blame LIDL or any other store for any incident.

Especially one that you know is supposedly infamous for 'incidents'!

To be effective, LIDL would need to employ several guards constantly patrolling.

That is not going to happen.

It's not their problem.

If you think it is, don't shop there!

Wherever you go you are likely to be being watched.

I see people putting things like laptops and handbags in the boots of cars.

They may as well wave them in the air first and be shouting on megaphones.

Bad people are everywhere.

If you are going to leave valuables in the car, leave the car unlocked.

Otherwise you'll have an even greater monetary loss of a broken window.

Happy New Year, Keith

Watercress information from an Expert

Canónigos is not Berros - They are different, it is also what we call lambs lettuce
Yes you can buy canónigos in Mercadona and other supermarkets, but the only store around here that used to sell Berros was indeed Supersol

I used to buy it in the Torre Del Mar one. Maybe Hipercor in Torre may sell it I am not sure
Berros is a lot more expensive than canónigos
hope this helps

Málaga Car Chase

Police could not believe it when they gave chase to a car travelling at over 120km/h with a man clinging to its bonnet.

The Malaga driver is now facing reckless driving charges after he drove the man for over five kilometres on the MA-21 towards Torremolinos at 4am.

According to police, the bizarre incident started after the two men had a scuffle outside a bar in the city.

The driver was twice over the legal alcohol limit.

Transferring a UK Motorbike to Spanish Plates

Gerry mentioned that he wanted to know the procedure of transferring a UK registered motorcycle to Spanish plates (matriculation).

It is much the same procedure as for a car and as such would highly recommend that you use a Gestor, but if you are brave and speak fluent Spanish then you might like to attempt it yourself, I have found this guide on the Internet which seems to cover the process well, although I cannot guarantee it's accuracy: www dot settleinspain dot co dot UK/2011/10/30/how-to-import-a-car-or-motorcycle-into-spain

TV Reception

This reply is chiefly aimed at David but also anyone else who may have not read my articles in depth.

As previously explained, Astra 2F has two beams, a UK spot beam and a European beam. The spot beam is much tighter than the one on Astra 1N and is where some of the Freesat channels have moved to, hence their loss. As Freesat is legally only available in the UK there is no obligation for the BBC/ITV etc to provide their services outside of the UK territory.

Sky, however, uses the European beams from Astra 2A and Astra 2B, their channels will start to migrate to the European beam of Astra 2F, which should still be received without problem here on the Costa del Sol, in fact, it may be an even stronger signal than before.

I have tried to keep the explanations as non-technical as possible as I want everyone to understand these changes not just 'techies' (like me!).

As always anyone is free to contact me on:

Sending emails to more than one person

A Plea to everyone…..

When you send an email to several people  PLEASE put the email address of only ONE recipient in the To: box
Below this top box you will find two sets of initials - Cc  & Bcc
Cc means Carbon Copy and if you place the address of a second person in this box the first recipient can clearly see it.

Bcc is the BEST option  - click the Bcc and another box for email addresses appears.
You can place many, many email addresses in this box, one after the other (separated by a comma and a space)
The great thing about the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy)  is that no-one else can see all of the email addresses.
Using the Bcc box means that nasty software programs cannot go crawling through mail accounts gathering everyone's address so that  Spam emails can be sent to all and sundry.

The Motto is :-
Please forward by using Bcc and say No to Spammers

Thank you

Changes to BBC TV–from the horse’s mouth -

Changes to BBC satellite transponders in 2013
Alix Pryde
Director, BBC Distribution

I’m conscious that there is currently some speculation about the timing of forthcoming moves of BBC services between satellites and the reason for these changes. So I thought you would appreciate it if I set the record straight. The quick answer is that, as a result of SES’s fleet replacement programme, BBC services will move in the second half of 2013.

Regular readers will recall that in February 2012, SES retired Astra 2D and BBC services moved to a new temporary home on Astra 1N. Astra 1N is due to take up its permanent position in 2013 (19°East), so the BBC’s services will move to their new permanent home on Astra 2E (28.2°East) when that becomes operational. SES expects Astra 2E to launch in Q2 2013, so we currently expect to transition BBC services to it during summer 2013.

Some of you have also noticed that we commissioned a new transponder (which we call DSat8) in the autumn. It moved from its temporary home on Astra 1N to its permanent position on Astra 2F at the end of November 2012. DSat8 is still in a testing phase but in the coming months it will be used to broadcast  BBC One Scotland HD and BBC One Wales HD as we complete the programme of providing all Nations programming in glorious HD. We’ll be publishing the details of DSat8 on our satellite reception advice page when the services launch.

I hope that clarifies the timings of moves and also that the moves relate to the SES fleet replacement programme, rather than any BBC strategy to change its footprint. That said, the new transponders do have a slightly different footprint, so I’ll explain a bit about that, and why the changes are no cause for concern for the BBC in our requirement to ensure that the BBC’s domestic services are readily accessible to people living in the UK.

What impact will all this have for the viewer?

In all likelihood the move of BBC services from 1N to their new permanent homes will have no impact on UK households.  Astra 2E and 2F have the same, tighter but slightly more powerful UK spot beams which means that UK households should get a slightly stronger signal.  So if you happened to be on the edge of coverage, you will hopefully get more reliable reception.

The overspill of the BBC’s services will be reduced so viewers outside the UK will find it even harder to receive them. I know that this causes unhappiness to some of you living outside the UK.
However, it is entirely appropriate because the BBC domestic services are for people living in the UK only.

For viewers outside the UK, BBC Worldwide offers a number of channels which are available in various territories.  These include BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies along withBBC World News throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

I hope the detail above helps you to understand a bit more about the changes coming in the second half of 2013 and the reason for them.

TV EXplanation

According to the BBC their services will move from Astra 1N to Astra 2E in the summer of 2013, the following is from the BBC's Alix Pryde Blog "As a result of SES’s fleet replacement programme, BBC services will move in the second half of 2013." and also the following "Astra 1N is due to take up its permanent position in 2013 (19°East), so the BBC’s services will move to their new permanent home on Astra 2E (28.2°East) when that becomes operational. SES expects Astra 2E to launch in Q2 2013, so we currently expect to transition BBC services to it during summer 2013.". So Astra 2F cannot go below the 10.950 frequency which means that a viewing extension is given to those who can receive the Astra 1N Beam but cannot get the Astra 2F UK Beam, the BBC/ITV/Channel 4 family of channels which are on frequencies that are below 10.950 which have not been moved to Astra 2F will stay on Astra 1N for a little while longer, Summer 2013

Yet ANOTHER Incident at LIdl Algorrobo Costa !

I thought it only right to let as many people know about our unfortunate circumstance - 18th at LIDL Algarrobo Costa.

At approx 2pm we parked at the above infamous store to carry out our weekly shopping, on returning to our vehicle some 25 mins later our car alarm was set off a very kind gentleman from Holland who was standing beside our car told us that the drivers side window had been broken and that two suspicious looking young men who were hanging around our car were just about to leave the car park as I tried to make an effort to stop the car I was given a very defiant hand signal before they sped off with my partners handbag containing cash, two mobile phones and a bank card.

We immediately entered the store where a very helpful member of staff phoned the local police for us only to be told that we would have to go to Algarrobo police station. She then proceeded to get a box and brush and removed most of the glass from the drivers side of the car, we then proceeded directly to the police station only to find that they close at 3pm and would not be open for business until the following morning, its just as well we were not at all injured in the incident!!!!

So tomorrow we will return to the police station to report a crime that we feel should have been dealt with immediately. A lesson to be learned DON'T leave your handbag in the car even if it is hidden because simply, you like us are being watched. I do think that LIDL should take some responsibility with regards to these weekly or daily crimes at their store CCTV would be a start.

The good news is you have been clocked yes we have the details of the vehicle FIAT PANDA, SILVER, REG 3973 CTV the two men were in there early twenties one being about 5ft 10" and looked Spanish.

If you recognise this car then you could prevent someone from going through what we went through today by reporting the whereabouts of this vehicle to the Police.
